IN THE WORLD: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer. In 2012, 1.4 million new cases have been diagnosed and it is estimated that the number of new cases per year will increase up to 2.4 million by 2035.
IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA: Colorectal cancer incidence rate in EU Mediterranean countries is one of the highest in the world. Even though in non-EU Mediterranean countries this rate is sensibly lower, it is expected to experience a sharp rise by the next twenty years.
According to the studies carried out in the EUROMED CANCER Network project, effective screening programmes and strategies for cancer control have been developed in EU Mediterranean countries, while in some cases non-EU countries lack good information and prevention systems.
