The importance of adenoma surveillance in reducing colorectal cancer incidence

The Lancet Oncology - Removal of adenomas, precursors of most colorectal cancers, reduces colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. Patients perceived to be at increased risk after adenoma removal are recommended surveillance colonoscopy.

A group of English researchers examined heterogeneity in colorectal cancer incidence in intermediate-risk patients and the effect of surveillance on colorectal cancer incidence. The showed that colonoscopy surveillance benefits most patients with intermediate-risk adenomas.
